Privacy Policy

Whiskey Thief Journal (“Whiskey Thief”, “the app”, “we”) is a personal whiskey tasting journal. We built it to keep your collection private and on your device. This policy explains exactly what stays local, what is sent to third-party services to power specific features, and the choices you have.
Your collection stays on your device
Your bottles, tasting notes, ratings, prices, fill levels, value history, and photos are stored locally on your device. We do not host an account system and we do not upload your collection to our servers. Backups you create are saved or shared only where you choose to send them.
Information sent to third-party services
Some features work by sending the minimum necessary information to third parties:
- AI features (tasting notes, label scan, palate analysis, comparisons, cigar pairings, valuations): the relevant bottle details — and, for the label scan, the photo you choose — are sent to our processing service, which relays them to Anthropic (the Claude API) to generate a response. They are used to produce your result and are not used to train models.
- Barcode lookups: a scanned barcode may be sent to a product database (UPCitemdb) to fetch bottle details.
- Subscriptions: purchases are processed by the app store you bought from (the Apple App Store or Google Play) and managed through RevenueCat, which tells the app whether your Pro subscription is active.
- Community catalog (optional, off unless you turn it on): when enabled, only factual bottle information — name, distillery, region, ABV, and barcode — is shared. Your notes, ratings, photos, and prices are never shared.
What we do not do
We do not sell your data. We do not show third-party ads. We do not build advertising profiles, and we do not track you across other apps or websites.
Subscriptions and payment
Whiskey Thief Pro is an auto-renewable subscription sold through the Apple App Store or Google Play. We never see or store your payment-card details — the store handles billing. RevenueCat and the store process the transaction and entitlement status so the app can unlock Pro features.
Data retention and your controls
Because your data lives on your device, you are in control of it. In Settings you can export a full backup, export your collection as CSV, or clear all data. Deleting the app removes its on-device data. Information sent to the services above is retained according to their own policies.
Intended for adults
Whiskey Thief is intended for adults of legal drinking age in their jurisdiction. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from children.
Security
Network requests use encrypted HTTPS connections. No method of storage or transmission is perfectly secure, but we limit what leaves your device to what a feature actually needs.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be reflected here with a new effective date.
